A Lunch Worth Repeating

“Lunch is ready.”
His wife calls from the kitchen.
On the table are a plate of carbonara and a small bowl of salad.
He takes the first bite.
It is good.
Not quite restaurant food, perhaps, but no different from something he might order at a place he happened to stop by while out. In fact, this might even be better.
“This is really good. You’d never think it was frozen…”
He has said too much.
A little earlier, he had heard the ding of the microwave from the kitchen.
“You knew? Sorry. The refrigerator was completely empty. I’ll go shopping later and make a proper dinner tonight.”
She apologizes with the smile of a child whose little trick has been discovered.
“No, no. Thank you. It really was a delicious lunch.”
Perhaps it would not be such a bad thing if the refrigerator were empty two or three times a week.
